In a collaborative effort to address the longstanding humanitarian crisis stemming from conflict and insurgency in northeastern Nigeria, the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) is partnering with Dinovate Solutions to lead a pioneering project in Adamawa State. This initiative aims to tackle the critical issue of water system vulnerabilities in conflict-affected communities through participatory research and visual storytelling. The prolonged conflict in northeastern Nigeria has wrought devastation, leading to widespread displacement, infrastructure loss, and acute socioeconomic challenges. Among the dire consequences is the compromised access to essential water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) services, intensifying the humanitarian plight.
In partnership with IWMI and the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR), Dinovate Solutions is executing a comprehensive approach focused on understanding the specific complexities and gender dynamics surrounding water systems in fragile communities. Leveraging the innovative Photovoice participatory research methodology, the project is seeking to empower communities to articulate their experiences and needs through visual narratives.
Photovoice, employing visual storytelling through photography, will enable marginalized communities to advocate for social change by sharing their lived experiences. By centering community members in the research process, this approach ensures interventions are rooted in local perspectives and realities. Entrusted by IWMI to lead this project, Dinovate Solutions is aiming to achieve several objectives, including gaining insights into vulnerabilities and challenges within water systems in conflict-affected communities, enabling community members, particularly women, girls, and youth, to express their experiences and needs through visual storytelling, raising awareness among stakeholders about the nuanced challenges faced by these communities, particularly regarding gender dynamics, and paving the way for more inclusive, effective, and sensitive interventions, contributing to improved water access, livelihoods, and health outcomes. The success of the project is being measured not only by the data collected but also by the tangible impact on the lives of those affected by the crisis.
